Samra Said is making waves in the world of cycling, and her recognition as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero 2024 for the London Region is a testament to her extraordinary impact. As Chair of Cycle Sisters, Samra has dedicated herself to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for Muslim women and girls to participate in cycling.

Since stepping into the role of Chair in 2020, Samra has helped Cycle Sisters to transform into a dynamic and influential organisation, growing to more than 1,500 members and a network of over 100 volunteer Ride Leaders across London. Her work addresses the challenges faced by Muslim women in accessing sport and ensures that cycling becomes an inclusive space for all.

Reflecting on the recognition, Samra expressed her surprise: "I never expected this. To be recognised for doing something I love and believe in is incredible. This award isn’t just for me; it’s for every woman who has found freedom and confidence through cycling with Cycle Sisters."

Samra’s contributions are deeply rooted in her grassroots efforts. She spearheaded the creation of a Cycle Sisters group in Hounslow in 2021, which now boasts over 300 members and holds regular rides. As a Group Coordinator and Ride Leader, she offers unwavering support to beginner cyclists, fostering a welcoming and empowering environment.

One participant, Marian, shares:

"Samra was my first Ride Leader, and her warmth and encouragement made me want to return. She has a remarkable ability to make you feel supported and capable of achieving more than you thought possible."

Samra’s influence is not only felt through her local rides but also in the broader cycling community. By representing Cycle Sisters at national and local events, Samra amplifies the voices of Muslim women in cycling, championing diversity and inclusion in sport. From speaking at conferences to collaborating on projects such as the launch of a modest cyclewear range with global brand Rapha, she has been instrumental in creating systemic change.
