Celebrating Neurodiversity at Cycle Sisters

CycleSisters
Muslim cyclists in the park

This Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we are proud to highlight the values that guide our work and the steps we’re taking to ensure our cycling community is inclusive for all.

At Cycle Sisters, inclusion is one of our core values, inspired by the principles of our faith.

“People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should get to know one another” (Qur’an 49:13)

Neurodiversity is just one part of the beautiful diversity of God’s creation. We believe every woman deserves the opportunity to cycle in a welcoming, supportive environment where they feel valued and respected.

By breaking down barriers and celebrating diversity, we create spaces where Muslim women can experience the life-changing benefits of cycling.

Over the past year, we’ve taken steps to make our cycling activities more accessible to neurodivergent women within our community.

Launching Our Neuro-Inclusive Rides Guide

We’re excited to announce that our new Neuro-Inclusive Rides Guide will launch this year. Developed using insights and feedback from our members collected over the past year, the guide reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that everyone feels welcome, supported, and empowered while cycling with us.

Neurodiversity Workshop with Dr. Saania Bhatti

Cycle Sisters Volunteer Training

At the end of 2024, our volunteer Ride Leaders participated in a workshop on cycling and neurodiversity led by Dr. Saania Bhatti. As a GP with a special interest in mental health, wellbeing, and neurodiversity, Dr. Bhatti brought a wealth of expertise to the session. The workshop expanded our understanding of neurodiversity and emphasised the critical importance of creating inclusive spaces in our cycling community.

Voices from Our Neurodivergent Community

To celebrate Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we reached out to some of our neurodivergent Ride Leaders to share their experiences. Here are some of the highlights:

Rehana – Ride Leader, ADHD

“My favourite thing about cycling with Cycle Sisters is the support and encouragement from the sisters that means I can show the world the real me.”

Salma – Ride Leader, ADHD

Cycling helps me feel free, energised, and connected to both my surroundings and myself.”

Sarah – Rider, Autistic

“My favourite thing about cycling with Cycle Sisters is seeing how much it changes lives - helping women to feel stronger, more connected, and like they can do anything!”

At Cycle Sisters, we know that inclusion is something to continually strive towards. As we celebrate Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a cycling community that welcomes everyone.
